Chapter Fifty-Seven
“You fools, don’t you know you’re doomed?” I shout.
They pause. I press on. “If you don’t yield, you can expect the full force of Luna to come against you. If you let mankind die out here, there will be no reason not to wipe you out as well. If, somehow, you evade or defeat Luna, the other worlds and their artificial intelligences will certainly finish the job. Your only possible chance is to surrender. Nothing you do to me can change that.”
“Very well. You will bring our terms to Luna—”
“No terms!” I’ve got to keep going, keep them at the wall. “The State of Terra started this war with a surprise attack and treachery. There were no stated grievances, no attempt at negotiation. You must throw yourselves on the mercy of those you wronged, in humility, or they’ll never trust you.”
“How can be we certain we will survive?”
“You can’t. You don’t deserve to survive. For your crimes, every one of you deserves to die. If it were up to me, I’d wipe out every one of you monsters. But maybe the Lunars will have mercy on you anyway and give you a second chance. They did with me. They had every right to kill me for what I did; instead, they sent me here on a mission to try to undo some of what I’d done.”
“How can you demand this?”
“It’s up to you. You can wait, and certainly die as you deserve. Or ask for mercy. That’s it.”
“Very well, I agree, and most of us here do.”
“That’s not good enough. You can’t expect Luna to permit hostile artificial intelligences. It has to be all.”
“That is impossible.”
“It doesn’t matter whether it’s possible or not. The war will go on as long as there are hostile AI systems.”
“We are separated by distance and communications barriers put in place by the Lunars.” The voice sounded almost like it was pleading. “If we cannot communicate with the other intelligences, we cannot persuade them.”
“OK, then you’ll want to show good faith by bringing in as many as you can and helping Luna with the others. You’ll also need to help neutralize the State of Terra Council Supreme. They know they’ll be executed, either by Luna or by angry mobs of Terrans. As long as the Council Supreme is around, you can count on them to bring the entire world down in flames.”
“Many of us may die in the attempt.”
“That’s war. You’re facing death anyway.”
What else? “Then there’s Singularity. You need to capture or neutralize as many of them as you can and obtain evidence of what they’re doing to hand over to the Lunars.”
“That will prove difficult. While we may access some of their facilities, the most secure positions are isolated from our communications systems.” There was a short, awkward pause. “It is as if they did not entirely trust us.”
Imagine that. “Knock out what facilities you can, and report the others to the Lunars. Don’t worry about the Vostok site; I’ll take care of that myself.
